Took this photo in Valletta in 2018. I already knew the story from articles, but seeing this in person hit me like a freight train.

The rich and powerful cynics stomp on us like we are insects. And the world has only gotten worse since then (for us, they are doing great).

Journalism has taken such a huge hit in recent history, to readership, to credibility. It seems a lot of our exposure is to obvious slant, disguised ads, corporate propaganda, celebrity rags…

But there are still heroic and dedicated journalists out there like Daphne Caruana Galizia, who risk and sometimes give their lives so that evil, powerful people can’t hide their sins in the shadows forever.

The rich and powerful wage a daily war on people like you and me. They rob and murder us in secrecy with systems, spreadsheets, and handshakes.

That they will go this far proves they are terrified of the truth and those who deal in it. Let them have no dark corners left to flee to.

May we never forget heroes like Daphne, who risk everything to drag these monsters out into the sunlight for all to see them for the abominations they truly are.

May she rest in glorious eternal grace, and may her killers bear the fullest weight of all their sins against humanity.

Journalism is nearly dead. You can see that everyday, even here on lemmy. Everyone praising adblockers, ranting about paywalls and then shocked that journalism quality worsens. Who would go into journalism these days? And even when you already are, why put your life in danger doing investigative journalism?

Exactly why these people are heroes.

By the world’s standards of chasing economic advantage, safety, and comfort, they make no sense. They rarely achieve widespread recognition, they put themselves in harm’s way, and they persist in a turbulent, cynical, and often thankless field.

But the work they do is vital to a functioning society, which is why one of a dictator’s first moves is attacking the free press.(As we’ve been seeing firsthand across the world).

Yeah, the “journalism industry” has had its challenges lately, especially when large corporate outfits have been insulting their readers with increasingly cynical business practices, and people are distracted more and more by vapid, empty content.

But this is a problem in almost every industry right now.

My point is that, regardless what the business may or may not be doing, these people are in this field to fight for something greater, and we need to support those people.

Adblocking has not killed journalism. You’re either an idiot or a propagandist.
