They banned the rental scooters. People were far too careless. Riding on the sidewalk, causing accidents, even deaths, and just leaving them in heaps on certain street corners.
I’m not convinced I agree that banning them was the solution but I suppose their infrastructure wasn’t ready for it. I’m not entirely anti car, but a similar statement could be made there “driving through pedestrian areas, frequently causing accidents and deaths, leaving them sitting for hours at a time blocking access”.
There was a major investment in bike lanes, but many people were being twits and knocking people over and fleeing the scene.
When they did ban there were quite a few angry people, particularly people who worked late at restaurants and used them to get home quickly without worrying about being bothered or taking late night buses and metros. After reading their opinions I would have to say I agree with you, banning may not have been the answer.
It’s for rental scooters, not all scooters. My guess is two reasons:
They’re left everywhere and can hog probably already crowded Paris sidewalks and bike racks.
They’re mostly used by inexperienced people who don’t know what they’re doing and will ride on sidewalks with little regard for pedestrians, especially in Paris with the large amount of tourists, who the parisians already hate.
I’m making an assumption based on my experience in a smaller American city but they are a nuisance and left anywhere and everywhere. People like to throw them in bodies of water too.
