On one hand I’m an IT specialist and want to have an intelligent home with home lab.
On the other hand I want to live in the mountains and grow my own food.
Not really that hard? You also don’t have to grow 100% of your own food. It’s fun, you save the gym fees, and the powerful have less power over you. Plus we eat like kings even in times of crisis. No need to romanticise, it’s actually a really neat thing to do.
Somehow I know thank my parents who forced me to help them garden as a kid: I know that’s not fun and hard work. If you like it, more power to you, but I am happy to code hard most of the year. I can give a hand the day of the harvest if you want, but fuck having to tend raised beds or weed almost daily a decently sized garden.

Just do both. Pro tip: don’t let domestic birds like turkeys get into the home lab, it’s not a good match.
Where does this romanticization come from anyway? It’s fucking hard work to have enough for the whole year.

Some rural areas have surprisingly good glasfiber home internet these days 😅
I used to live in countryside Japan where a fat fiber was going through. We had better internet connection than our friends in Tokyo _.
Now in rural France that’s another story :-(
Not a day goes without me thinking like this. I guess we can have a blend of both if we try.
