  • Not sure where else to put this, but I appreciate ani.social for new anime/manga discovery. Sometimes I toggle on Local and look around, and I often find an anime or manga title that sounds interesting, I click it, I look it up online and maybe read some discussion here about it if applicable, and add it to my ever-growing list of stuff to read or watch.

It is also funny because I see people writing that they didn’t like an anime or manga for X reason, and X reason is exactly what draws me to it. I find both positive and negative reviews pretty useful as long as you say why you (dis)liked it. You tell people what kind of content is there (often tells more than just the promo content for the anime/manga/book/film/game/whatever it is), and they can judge for themselves. I always toss over an upvote to these because they are useful on telling me if I’d like the content or not, even if the opinion they have on the work ends up being opposite to mine.

  • I just checked the community a little more and that was kind of a dumb question of me because you have posted there before 😅 thanks for the answer, it is on my MyAnimeList now as Plan to Read! Curious if it is more a comedy or if it turns out dark as the summary suggests.

Wondering if I should make a new otome isekai community here, it might get more engagement as they are indeed anime and manga. Although some are manwha which might not be allowed as that is Korean and not Japanese and this instance’s sidebar says

For all things anime and other related Japanese media such as manga, games, vtubers, and light novels.

However, given some of them are manga and anime, it should be okay to let manwha in as it follows the genre. I’d feel really bad and frankly annoyed excluding manwha that fits the genre.

  • Thanks for the “mostly fanart posts” disclaimer. Back on Reddit and now on Lemmy, a big issue I have with anime communities is it is often just Pixiv/Twitter/Danbooru art reposts. It is kind of annoying because I want to talk about the anime, not see art reposts. Yes, I understand Lemmy is a link aggregator and so that is a valid use of Lemmy, and my frustration is likely an uncommon opinion given this is how most anime communities are and there seems to be lots of upvoting and little pushback. Guess that’s what !episode_discussion@ani.social is for, but you would still think you would find more discussion about AnimeName on the community named AnimeName. All goes to say, thank you for that disclaimer!

  • Likewise. I watch anime for entertainment, and if that means I miss an influential series (whether due to lack of time or just plain old lack of interest) I’m fine with it.

I do tend to be somewhat picky but it also means that I rarely end up feeling like I wasted my time watching a show—I am fairly aware of my own tastes and what I might like and dislike, though I can 100% still be surprised, and so I usually end up picking shows I’d actually like. I might have excluded some I’d like but I have also excluded shows I would feel I wasted my time by watching, so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
