Overuse of emojis can also really be annoying for people using screen readers. They clapping hands get clapping hand to clapping hands hear clapping hands something clapping hands like clapping hands this. So it’s also an accessibility issue.
It’s nice that they don’t shy away from overhauling existing systems completely (instead of tacking on new systems).
Many people have purposefully moved away from Big Tech platforms, often because they cause them harm. Who are you to judge their defederation - which is a core feature of the Fediverse btw - as laughable? Every instance is free to decide their own policies, that’s the whole point.
Never too late to limit the impact as much as we can.
I’m afraid it’s mostly that last one.
Watch people flock to yet another corporate social media honeypot instead of going for something less dystopian.
Are you referring to the Digital Markets Act that would force some large tech players to allow interoperability?
I think it’s a great step forward, although I think it’s only in 2024 that those changes will actually happen.
We also can’t plant enough trees to mitigate climate change.
This won’t do, they don’t have a pun or funny reference in their URL!
Really goes for almost everything. I don’t want my machines and appliances to be ‘smart’ and ‘connected’. I just want them to do the thing I use them for, that’s it.
Use any messaging app and choose to make it default. Make core messaging functionality interoperable. They lay out concrete examples like file transfer.
I’ve read some things like this. Is it correct that messaging services will need to interoperate? WhatsApp, Messenger, iMessage? Would love to be able to message people that I can’t easily reach now from Signal for instance.
Good, long overdue.
Is there anything on the accompanying Digital Markets Act and it’s effects? I can’t seem to find any comprehensive recent articles.
If he isn’t bought and paid for by the fossil fuel lobbies, then he admits to being a complete idiot.
Read up on the history of… any emancipatory movement, really. Civil disobedience, strikes, direct action, have all involved some forms of violence (be it so-called vandalism, or direct confrontation between groups). Many in reaction to violence by the state or corporations (Battle of Blair Mountain!). Thinking we will achieve far-reaching goals without resorting to some sort of radical actions is ludicrous.
Coincidentally, I had a conversation about dating and climate change with a friend today. We both agreed that people showing off their exotic travel destinations have become a turn-off. Especially when they use airplane emoji’s in their bio. On the other side: it does feel like some sort ‘race’ to show off those fancy place to communicate how well off you are, and not having pics like that may make you less attractive (but then again, why would I want to attract those huge polluters?). Dating gets you in a weird headspace, fucking hell.
Self-regulation fails. Can we solve it with more self-regulation?
Are those still playable? Loved those, great vibe!
I admit I’m sharing this because I’m hyped to see the London Conference represented. Finally I’ll be able to rectify the historical injustice of losing half of Limburg to the Dutch.
