  • I used to know three homeless people whom I used to talk to on my way home from work. I gave them cash, bought them food. I have no idea if they are still alive today. I know of at least seven more whom I occasionally keep in touch with. And some more who have been homeless previously, but who have survived that through various feats and means and landed on their feet again. Sleeping rough in Sweden, above Skåne, is fucking rough.

Out of my limited and anecdotal experience, I don’t blame a single one of them for getting hooked on drugs. Alcohol got too expensive, tobacco is waaaay too expensive for effect, so the high and low that other drugs could give kept them warm throughout the roughest nights and/or John experiences.

  • It seems that every article from Jacobin is skewed ever so slightly, not enough to make most think there’s something wrong, but it seems to skew anti-progressive by tone and wording, while being assertive in part to some center (or right-leaning by European standards), and aggressive in language towards selective parts of the far-right while mellowing down the tone against conservatives in general.

It’s like eating candy and discovering that the sugar coating is actually aluminium.

  • We discovered I had some kidney cysts. Which isn’t unusual, fairly normal above a certain age apparently.

One had previously burst (during a time when I thought it was overexertion during ten days hiking a trail) and had left scarring. As I had had no complications (other than three days of constantly feeling like someone kept stabbing my back), it was considered normal and had resolved without any other complications than some scarring.

The other popped recently, and it felt like someone had stabbed me in my sleep, it jolted me awake, hurt like hell and then I had bloody urine with clots. Was scary, but once I went through ultrasound and cat-scans it was deemed as not all that unusual and not to worry. I am now on antibiotics and oxy, with a follow up visit later this week once my blood results come back.

  • It’s not months of free labour. He is still contractually obligated to do his job until the end of his notice period. I have the same rules in place. I have to give my employer three months notice if I decide to leave, but they have to give me six months notice if they decide to let me go. The duration can be negotiated. During those months, I will do my very best to finish my projects or prepare them to be passed on to colleagues. I am still being paid, but my employer can also give me the option to just take the time off, paid, and not come into work any more.

Unions, people, protect your unions and they might just protect you.
