  • According to political theory, the police are the manifestation of the state’s so-called monopoly on violence. The police exist specifically to do violence to citizens of a state. Is the state wrong? Are the police wrong? There’s no wrong answer, but there can be inconsistent ones.

The only possible responses to immediately present violence are surrender or greater violence. You cannot judge someone who chooses to respond to violence with violence – or who finds their bodies have chosen for them.

Slave owners argued that their slaves received benefits, like a place to sleep and food. Such arguments are only convincing to those who benefit from exploiting the bodies of vulnerable individuals. These arguments exist not to convince others, but to alleviate moral conflict within the person giving the argument.

The truth is, neither slaves nor animals need an owner’s help to live and thrive, all such can do is prevent their innate expressions and rob their autonomy. Virtually anyone here would sacrifice some food and sleep for the autonomy to choose their own mate, raise their own children, and choose the effect they have on the world.

  • OTOH if you have to ask, then a couple possibilities need to be considered. Maybe they are already so well appointed, a twenty dollar trinket is just a waste of our planet’s dwindling resources. Maybe you know them so poorly, it really isn’t appropriate to be buying them a gift in the first place.

What we all want for our birthday is to feel like we are special to the people in our lives. That they know us, care about us, and wish us well. That’s not the sort of thing you can ask for; if you have to ask, it devalues it tremendously. We can all buy stuff for ourselves. Asking what they want and then buying it for them rather defeats the point of a birthday gift between two adult peers; its the sort of thing a parent does for a child, because a child only cares about getting stuff.
