A pain in the ass for sure, but it isn’t really out of the ordinary if, for example, you were riding a bicycle from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh via the Great Allegheny Passage. You’d already be pulling your camping gear; the folks I know who did the GAP on pedal power did so with almost 100lbs in gear split across one trailer and three bikes’ worth of pannier bags.

I recently bought an eBike after maybe 10 years of not bicycling bc I moved to an area that is radically unfriendly for bikes and had the thought that I could pretty easily pull a small center-balanced trailer with a 50lb LiFePo4 battery and two 200W solar panels arranged in an alpine frame above it.
Add a MPPT controller and some cables, and my thought was, perhaps it could essentially make a “one to stock, one to rock” scenario with the bike batteries — one is in use to go like 30 miles, then you swap the charged one in and get 30 more miles. These eBike batteries aren’t the biggest, they should be able to charge pretty quickly. My gut says you could get between 2-3 free battery charges per day like this.
Does anyone have any insight on this? Feels like it could be a good way to bring bicycle touring back onto the menu.
It honestly shocked me so much that I had to do some research before bed just to make sure that number was right. Seems like it was. But I also was there in Pittsburgh during the riots that happened during the 2009 G20 summit, and that also saw similar numbers of people arrested and charged.
No city has resources, especially right now, to find charges that stick on all those people, so they put everyone in front of a judge on a rapid fire basis, and that judge basically triages the ones with charges that would actually matter. I saw something like 80% of the cases get dropped entirely, though, many months later, which is still plenty of time to ruin a worker’s life.
I saw on the news last night that here in Philly, there were almost 70 arrests by city police of a group of union demonstrators doing an organized sit-in. When they were hauling one middle-aged black lady away, the news shoved a microphone in her face and asked if it was worth it. She just replied, “solidarity forever.” ✊🏻
Honestly I am thankful all the time that people are able to find jobs that suit them best. I am a graphic designer by trade, and working from home has basically been the greatest creative boon I’ve ever had in my life, lol. The routine, access to nature, and just general lack of distractions has been incredible.
I mean I was referring to having a shop in your garage so you can build furniture, but you’re not wrong. Construction carpentry is one of the more intense trades I’ve seen.
It’s never too late to enter carpentry. I know quite a few programmers who do carpentry as their main hobby. Something about the math and the amount of careful planning is highly transferrable, I guess.

moreover, i think it’s just weird that everyone expects generative ai to be as open and useful and free as it has been. it’s all to get us to trust and use it unknowingly, then they’re gonna start jacking the prices up. we’ve seen it before with cable television, internet, consumer goods like shoes and computer parts, and more. open source efforts have gone a long way, but it’s still all a tinkerers’ hobby, not a viable alternative.

Yeah, honestly, the way things are set up isn’t perfect. I maintain a few accounts on different instances just to fan out what content I get. The Fedi is always gonna have issues with moderation and federation, I just don’t see it as a good enough reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
