Dungeon Meshi is a well liked manga, and an adaptation by Studio Trigger is now airing. If you haven’t picked this one up, consider joining us. Both for fun and as a way of contributing to activity on Lemmy.

Episodes are available to stream on Netflix.

Laios’ party finally runs into Shuro and his retainers! And along with them, Kabru and his mini-cult.

We learn about of the smallest creatures in the dungeon, and we finally get to know some of the girls that Shuro is dragging around.

One of them has very good hearing.

Remember not to spoil anything if you’re a manga reader, but feel free to elaborate on tidbits of lore that may not be coming through in the adaptation.

I get the feeling that Chilchuck would be pretty good at those old school rpg games that had puzzles which were almost indecipherable. He managed to somehow extract patterns out of the chaos that the dungeon creator has introduced. Truly the type of player that would have a set of hand-drawn maps and diagrams at his side while trying to figure something out.

After the gang manages to go up a level, we finally reunite with my favorite character so far, dripping with true protagonist potential. He is surrounded by people that seem to worship him and is traveling with another party now. Initially, there is some hesitation towards Laios, but the reunion that was fated could not be stopped and he is invited to a small group discussion to get caught up on Laios’s journey to this point. It was a bit of a shame that he was asked to leave so that Shuro and Laios could talk by themselves, but he got the info in the end. Oh, did you think I was talking about Shuro? Nah, I only have eyes for Kabru. /s

Seems like Senshi has found a woman after his own heart in Maizuru. It’s almost a shame she is so devoted to Shuro as I thought that her and Senshi actually had some good chemistry together and they obviously share a passion for food. Don’t worry Senshi, there is still the one out there for you, sorry that Anne the Kelpie didn’t work out. Keep at it buddy!

In all seriousness, I am not really sure what Kabru’s plan is here. Was this really just meant to be a fact finding mission? Is he going to make a move against Laios and co.? Might Kabru make a move against Marcy specifically because she knows dark magic? He is the wildcard in this joint party that might really shake things up. Laios’s and Shuro’s parties seem mostly cordial with each other and the rest of Kabru’s party will just follow his lead. So, it’s up to him to do something unless some outside force comes across the group…

    Oh, look, Falin is back!

I suspect you’re referring to the Mad Sorcerer, but we are also still missing one more party of characters. They were teased in both OPs, and now the ED art as well, and have been mentioned once.

      Oh, look, Falin is back!

Shuro: “So who’s this Delgal guy?!”

Looking forward to a new party of characters. The cast has gotten pretty large at this point, but it has grown gradually, so it hasn’t been too difficult to keep track of everybody.

IKR. The story really is meticulously crafted, and the adaptation could not have been picked up by a more caring studio. I’m now dreading the wait for more that the end of this run will bring.

IIRC we’ll be spending some time on getting to know Shuro and his girls before the cast grows again.

The last few episodes haven’t come with any big events, but you can just feel how everything is building towards another Red Dragon level development. Tiny pieces and details being put in place all over.

Watch out Kabru. This man may not be able to outsmart anyone, but he has yet to meet anyone who can outdumb him.

I want to talk about the retainers a bit, and tell you about them in more detail than what gets revealed during the course of the story. I like all of them, and one in particular, whom we’ll get to spend a lot of the series with.

Shuro is from a different continent and culture, and a member of a powerful family. “Retainers”, are slaves. They are beggars or purchased children that show some kind of promise, brought into the family and provided for, in exchange they are groomed for a life of servitude.

Maizuru in particular is clearly very fond of Shuro, and though she is a bit older than him, she was his tutor for all things scholarly as he grew up, during which they formed a bond. Shuro used to like her back.

What I’ll write next is never stated outright in the main plot, but must be discovered by reading bonus chapters and charachter sheets.

Shuro can no longer look at Maizuru straight, because he found out his father was screwing her. This is even more fucked up because Maizuru became a retainer of the family as a child. She is also vehemently hated by Shuros biological mother because of this. But when it comes to things that members of the clan want from their retainers, the word “no” does not exist.

I’m fairly neutral on Shuro. He does not take learning how Falin was revived well, but likely only because if put in the same position, he would have made the very same call. Not that his party would’ve had the option of saving her at all. While he’d like to do the obvious and bring Laios before the law. He can’t.

Still. Falin could do better. Not in terms of position, but while Shuro is a fairly decent person, he is sheltered and terminally upper-class. I’m not sure he’s wised up to the fact that having “retainers” is pretty un-cool.

Meanwhile Kabru is just standing around enjoying the shit out of other people's emotional turmoil, like the drama-whore he is.

I want to sock this piece of shit even more than last time we saw him. Look at him smiling about someone using dark magic like a kid in a toy store.

Fully expecting Kabru to use this as blackmail in the future, and to further cement in hating him.

It’s worse. Kabru actually knows why forbidden magic is forbidden. He’s legitimately just hyped for the consequences.

And I think he’s the type who’d kill Laios just for talking to Orcs, and then walk home grinning, fully certain he’s put in another days work making the world a better place. He’s just holding off for fun.

It always surprises me whenever the shows goes from comfy fun adventuring to talking about laws and stuff, I never expect it and then get slapped with oddly grounded world of this show, characters have to combat with responsibilities of being an adult and the laws and prejudices of the society. I didn’t even consider the possibility of the black magic being something that can get you a life sentence.

Also obligatory fuck Kabru, all my homies hate Kabru (`皿´)

The western elven nation is a world power, and they’re the ones primarily suppressing research into certain types of magic. In that sense, the Tansus and the governor are playing with geopolitical fire.

Marcille is a bit of a rebel, and booksmart as she is looks at things objectively. So as there’s no clear reason why a spell that pulls energy from another dimension should be off-limits, she’s comfortable looking into things the law says she shouldn’t. It’s the entire reason she is on the island, as she’s been looking for someone or something that can teach her more about this magic and its applications.

“The dark arts” are outlawed by most nations, yes, but the real reason people won’t touch it with a ten foot pole, was mentioned by Chilchuck in a previous episode.

Even before considering local laws, people get disappeared by the elven government, even outside their borders, just for being tangentially involved with mere artefacts that might be related to forbidden spells.

I see, I’ll have to check last week’s episode, completely forgot what Chilchuck said. Thanks for the info, will all this be covered in future episodes?

Marcille insinuated that Chilchuck should have learned magic, and he retorts that the only people he could have learned from among his own kind, got abducted by elves.

When we met the governor, he and Tansu also discussed that the elven government is pressuring the governor to abandon the dungeon and give up the land it is on.

Thanks for the info, will all this be covered in future episodes?

Yes and no. A lot of exposition is never explicitly covered in the story. Most of my details are put together from reading the manga several times, as well as the bonus chapters and the world guide that I’ve been posting pages from. (you can find it on mangadex, but it’s full of spoilers, so if you like, search “world guide” in the community to find all the pages that are spoiler free for an anime watcher)

I’m limiting myself to only very slightly expanding on what it’s possible to put together from what we’ve seen so far in the anime.
