I don’t understand, does that mean that the rest of the EU countries are fine with the IDF targeting UNIFIL? Netherlands? Germany? Austria? Sweden? really?
They just did not sign the statement, but there is an EU statement and Germany and Austria did condemn them independently and as part of the joined UNFIL country statement as well. The Netherlands is also part of the UNFIL statement.
Thanks for the information, it seemed extremely strange to me that only those countries condemned something like this
The Dutch government is basically controlled by the PVV party, who’s founder and leader used to be a settler on the west bank. They run on a heavy anti Islam/ anti refugee platform. So basically, “Isreal good, brown people bad”.
founder and leader used to be a settler on the west bank
That’s not exactly true, according to Wikipedia:
Because he did not have enough money to travel to Australia, his preferred destination, he went to Israel instead[7] and volunteered for a year in a moshav, Tomer, on the West Bank.

That was not their job. Their job is to monitor, cooperate with the local people and ensure access to humanitarian aid. They are specifically not tasked with fighting, except when defending themselves against attacks.
Also demanding observers to leave only makes sense when you plan to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity. Not that existing observers stopped Israel before, but they still make a point of “removing” them.

https://unifil.unmissions.org/unifil-mandate
It is not the mandate of UNIFIL to directly fight people, unless in self defense. Stop conflating the general goals of the resolution with the mandate of UNIFIL.

Leave me alone says the person who’s responding when they have no need to.

Yeah real personal on this public forum.
- They’re ineffectual, weak, and don’t do anything, and have failed their mission.
- They are so effective and strong, that they need to leave so the IDF is safe.
Pick one.
They’re literally hunkered down inside bunkers in their bases - which are well documented, flying UN flags, and painted peacekeeper white. The only place they’re “standing in the way” is in your propaganda. And now they’re “human shields” for Hezbollah, which if history is repeated, means they’re days/weeks away from direct Israeli bombing.
When you shoot at UN peacekeepers, you’re almost always the bad guy.

The biggest threat to peace in the region right now is not Iran, it is not them who should be kept out of the territory of another sovereign state
You appear to be ignoring Iran’s support for terrorist organizations in other countries.
Hey
I sent you DM 3 days ago, but haven’t gotten an reply. Just wanted to let you know in case your lemmy client doesn’t notify you of DMs
Oh it does, but I did not want to mod yesterday.
Are you kidding? Israel has killed countless civilians in Gaza, committing obvious crimes like indiscriminately cutting off running water, is invading a sovereign state without the slightest cause accepted by international law, committing crimes as collective punishment. It has been clearly endangering the security of states like Iran in what is a provocation that even the US has protested. But for you it is not the greatest danger to the security of the region, you cannot be serious.
Your comment had two pieces, and my comment was contesting the second part only, namely this:
it is not them who should be kept out of the territory of another sovereign state
… because clearly, they’re arming terrorist groups in another sovereign state specifically for the purpose of hurting yet another sovereign state.
The biggest threat to peace in the region right now is not Iran,
While I am at it: I find ascribing the role of a “biggest threat” a bit pointless in this situation. Yes, Israel is clearly killing a lot of people right now. A lot more than either Hamas or Hezbollah on their own ever could.
Imo, the situation in the Middle East results from a pointless series of provocations where people chose to escalate rather than de-escalate.
At this time only one state has its own troops on the soil of another country without having been invited in the entire Middle East. Everything else is cheap talk that covers up or relativizes the genocidal acts of a criminal state.
