Co-founder Hideaki Anno’s current studio Khara acquires Gainax’s trademark

Anime studio Gainax announced on its website on Friday that it filed for bankruptcy in the Tokyo District Court on May 29. The bankruptcy proceedings are happening just short of the studio’s 40th anniversary in December.

Every new season comes with 50 new and continuing animes releases. This bubble has been threating to pop for awhile now.

Reading through the article, it seems like this case can be chalked up to (likely) criminal mismanagement. I mean…giving huge unsecured loans to company executives while at the same time not paying the royalties you owe to other production committee members. It just sounds like embezzlement with extra steps.

Those are separate matters as far as I am concerned. Gainax has been effectively defunct for years now and on the decline for more than a decade.

I mean, you’re right, but Gainax hardly released anything the past 10 years. The last full TV anime production was in 2015 (from what I can see on Anilist). After that only a few shorts. So I don’t think Gainax’s bankruptcy has anything to do with that.
