Not sure if this topic fits in this community but recently my account on a lemmy instance with a .ml extension (lemmy.fmhy.ml) was rendered inaccessible.
While the instance works to a degree (I can set a dns overide to gain acess) due to the broken domain it effectivly renders my account (and the instance lost due to federation).
While bookworm is fine I worry about other instances like lemmy.ml which has the same domain prefix and hosts many communities.
Well… A good reminder not to host a production app on a free domain name.
Another reason why .com, .org or .(European country) is better. Especially .org or .online or .world are perfect for lemmy instances. Why use a domain from an African country?
not sure about lemmy.ml but fmhy was sorta piracy related (I only chose since it was at the top of join lemmy at the time and it had a open federation policy) and possibly instance owners didn’t want a regestrar which could seize the domain easily (although that seems to have backfired).
FMHY was a great freedom instance. The only defederated instances were Lemmygrad and exploding-heads. And those were both so awful that I actually wanted to see them defederated. The only one I would have added to the defed list is Burggit because it’s literally just for loli content and it’s just fucking gross.
Do you know of other instances the same as FMHY in that regard?
Regarding lemmy.fmhy.ml they are moving the site to fmhy.net
- lemmy.fmhy.ml accounts are automatically ported to fmhy.net
- Unfortunatley they will need to refederate meaning other instances may see duplicate communities (ones form the dead lemmy.fmhy.ml and new fmhy.net).
Maybe lemmy.world?
Because ml stands for Marxist Leninist
Damn that really sucks, FMHY was my main instance.
If you want to backup your subscriptions you can use a dns rewrite to gain pseudo acess back lemmy.fmhy.ml → 104.21.81.71
Example:
not sure if this is browser cache…
