Another week in the books. Let’s chat about manga in the general discussion thread! Feel free to use this thread for questions, comments, recommendations, etc.
Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).
Welp, I was rather unhappy that a bunch of series I follow haven’t updated in a while. Turns out some did, just not on Mangadex.
Fool Night, one of the series I posted here before, is apparently up to chapter 88 on Manganato while MD hasn’t seen an update (in English) in 7 months. That’s what you get for forgetting series got an official translation, I guess. Too bad it’s 6 volumes behind…
Time to check out other titles as well.
Only I Know the World Is Ending and Getting Killed by Rampaging Beasts Only Makes Me Stronger - c1-c31 - 18+ tag is only for gore stuff and it definitely fits. Blood is depicted in hectoliters.
Aria of the Beech Forest - volume 1 and half of volume 2 - cute enough to keep my suspension of disbelief about a girl living alone in the forest not knowing what technology is and her reaction to that technology.
she is beautiful just got into 4 chapters so far but the title of second chapter couldn’t be more poetic.
I picked up 3 LGBTQ+ manga:
Gal-loving JK Wants to be a Gal
So far, this is a typical lesbian school romance with nothing to differentiate it from other similar works. The “Award Winning” tag got me interested though.
Yuri Yuri Panic ~ An Extremely Precious Affair has Begun!~
This is some weird shit, which makes it perfect for me. The world needs more zany stuff.
Uesugi-kun Wants to Quit Being a Girl
Picked this one up thanks to the discussion thread by @PrincessKadath@ani.social. It reminds me of Maid Hachiya-kun Is In Love and NG Life.
It is one of the few rare instances of works that feature a MTF trans protagonist and actually address the issue of menstruation. Like, you are telling me all those isekai transgender protagonists just accept their new bodies without any complaints and can go straight to adventuring like it’s no big deal!? The only other manga that showcased a transgender lady having her first period in recent memory is Introduction To Girlhood / Shoujo Nyuumon. (And in not-so-recent memory, The Day He Becomes a Woman)
Edit: Just found out that Undead Unluck had just ended. Looks like I’ve got some catching up to do.
Kanojo Ni Haru Hi is a 10 out of 10 for me.
Been doing a lot of catching up on the backlog this past week. However, I did find a couple new things worth mentioning:
Scrolling through the recent updates page, the cover for this one caught my eye. Clicking through, I was utterly confused by the tags I was greeted with. Girls’ Love? Comedy? Romance? That checks out based on the title and description… Sci-Fi? Aliens? What the heck? So…I started reading it and, yep, aliens… I have no idea where this thing is going to go, but it has my attention now.
This is one of those times that I wanted to share a series, but not recommend that you read it. I clicked through based on the title, but then was shocked at how low the rating on MD was, and my curiosity got the better of me. My thoughts were that it’s not great, but not <5 rating worthy. That’s when I decided to check out the 400+ comments on MD for chapter 1 to see if I was missing something. Turns out this series is based on a webnovel and there were spoilers in the MD comments and…it’s pretty messed up. Just a whole heap of dumpsters going up in flames. So, steer clear of this one unless you really enjoy rolling around in the trash.
If you are looking for a palate cleanser after the last series, this one will serve you well. It’s about as wholesome as they come. Basically a short guy and a tall girl are going out and deliver some wholesome romance fluff. End of story…
I liked this one more than I thought I was going to. It’s about a shy girl that decides to remake herself into a gal upon entering high school. She is quickly accepted into a gal friend group and is striving not to blow her cover as a pretend gal. It seems like it is headed towards a yuri route, so if you are into yuri between gyaru, then this one might be for you.
Ok, I’ve bitten since I read as much trash as good things. Holy crap, I already want to run away.
I found the spoiler, and it’s even worse than the three chapters I read.
Haha, pretty much my experience as well. I was willing to give it a shot, but it’s not even fun trash.
