I’m writing is as an author who lost all her work after a hard disk failure. Please make sure to make a daily backup of the site on a USB!
Better safe than sorry.
Server now does daily backups onto another drive in my house.
In case my house gets flooded the data would still be gone but given that I live on a hill I don’t think that’s gonna happen soon.
Unrelated (sort of) but do you need a place to backup your stuff or did you figure something out already?
Edit: Also if you’ve got the money use an external hdd/ssd instead of a usb, they’re even less prone to failure than usb drives
I use google drive and dropbox, but curiously novels don’t require that much storage compared to discussion forums. A few megs at most.
I run a script to back up to all theee places (usb, gdrive, dropbox) each day I write something 😁
Backups are planned (in 1-2 years I guess), for now the data should be good as the server drive is brand new.
What if I or you accidentally delete something like yesterday. We should have at least one back up.
Good point, having at least one (daily) backup would reduce that risk. For now though it’ll have to be on the same disk so not as good as I’d like it
Update: lemmy kindly provides a backup script in their documentation, I’ll just have to tweak it and set up a backup folder/server to store it on (the last part will help move the backups to a separate device once I…
I’ll type this down live: I have a separate devoce I can use for backups, it’s just in a drawer…
I’ll set up backups properly (different device and drive) on the weekend, until then it’s DB digging if we encounter any issues
