    This is hilarious.

My husband runs our Lemmy instance, and he’s subscribed to the Linux community, which is one of the most active on Lemmy (I probably don’t need to tell you that.) I’m basically just here for memes and I ultimately blocked the Linux community because it was all over my feed. I’m a normie and I just don’t care about Linux whatsoever, not enough for every other post to be about it anyway.

But not when the only joke they can muster being “Other OS bad for [insert dumb false argument here]”

See the problem is, and I’ve experienced this myself, you leave Windows when it has a set of issues that have been long running. Then years later you get into an argument or make a meme and Windows now actually fixed that issue without you noticing because, well you’re not using it anymore.

Still would like some memes other than “hurr durr, Windows bad”, there’s plenty of memeable content within the Linux ecosystem (like every second app for a small niche ignoring XDG_HOME and just shitting the config files all over your home directory)

I think the issue is that most Linux users aren’t technically proficient enough to understand and make actual Linux memes about things like XDG_HOME, so the best they can think of is “Windows bad”.

ReactOS is dead and will go nowhere.

The reason I say this is that I’ve been following them for something like 15+ years by this point, and they haven’t made any perceptible progress in that time. They’re at exactly the same point now where they were 15 years ago.

Yes, Windows has become alarmingly invasive and dumbed down.

But how difficult is it to use actual arguments to prove they did instead of pulling completely false ones out of your ass?

I make fun of Windows search all the time because it deserves it.

But I’m not going to make fun of Windows update because it doesn’t directly tell you what they changed. Since a single google search can give you the answer.

Anyway, Linux memes should be about Linux, not Windows. It is almost like those Linuxians are jealous Windows has a ginormous market share while their respective distro does not.

funny you mention that, wanna know what you get if you look at the Kernel running underneath Android? Oh would you look at that, it’s actually Linux…

I do agree on the weird obsession with hating windows but lack of market share is not the reason it happens, it’s probably more due to people leaving Windows in the first place because they were immensely unsatisfied with it (Unlike Windows or Mac there are very few Linux Pre-Built PCs out there so chances are any given Linux Desktop User actively decided on that choice) and are now just hung up and bashing on it.

By that logic, they are all actually running UNIX. Including Mac.

I see plenty of people being unsatisfied with Windows jumping to Linux with big fanfare.

But I also see plenty of people silently crawling back to Windows after Linux was even less satisfactory.

In the end, no OS is better than the other. They all have their usecases. Yes even TempleOS. And shitting on an others preferred OS is just dumb preschool infighting.

I tried switching to Firefox some weeks ago but deinstalled it immediately after realising that it’s DNS doesn’t work. My ISP is censoring some 🏴‍☠️ websites and I can only visit them by not using my ISP’s dns service.

No matter which DNS i selected in the browser settings I always got an error saying that Firefox couldn’t reach the DNS. I will stick to Opera GX now 🤷‍♂️

Edit: it’s funny how the butthurt Firefox users downvote me for just talking about my experience with the browser.

In my browser. If I setup Google public dns or cloudfare in Opera GX as DNS it works perfectly fine. The only downside is that I can’t access fritz.box anymore, I have to use the IP of my router to be able to access it, I just bookmarked it though.

In Firefox the dns settings dont work at all. If I disable dns I get the censoring screen, if I enable any of the dns settings Firefox always says it can’t reach the DNS service.

It might be a good idea to get a good VPN for any of those sites (even the streaming ones). No hate if you ran into an issue with FF. Every now and then I do see some PCs act weird with FF DNS options. Never able to figure out what causes them to not work correctly while most other PCs are working fine on the same local network. Opera and Opera GX “feel” too “busy” for me personally with just all the random things on the UI and features. I support people using anything that isn’t official Chrome at this point.

If you don’t already have a VPN, here is a list article with more than a few options and give some basic info on stuff like if they keep logs of IPs and for how long. Some of them also have additional DNS options for removing ads. https://torrentfreak.com/best-vpn-anonymous-no-logging/

no the browser is the one to blame because the same settings which work in Opera don’t work in Firefox. I know I could change my dns system wide but it’s a personal preference to only make small changes to a running system.

There are 3 options for dns over https in Firefox and none of them work. disabling it obviously doesn’t work too because Firefox uses my ISP’s dns service then.

I like the memes, but that’s it. I use Linux, sure, but I also have to use Windows for a few programs because WINE doesn’t work with said programs, and the alternatives aren’t the best

With that being said, would I prefer Linux to be mainstream? Yes. Will it ever be? Probably not. Too many people just want something that works out of the box and don’t want to spend hours fixing some obscure bug.

I am a nerd. Therefore, I am okay spending time working on my machine and making sure everything runs well. I have previously looked at an OS that doesn’t seem to work or is starting to have issues and completely swap to a different distro using a base I have used and know will work 100% of the time
