Info on the bigot Nick Adams: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Adams_(commentator)
Relevant part:
Adams opposes education regarding LGBTQ topics in schools and said that only a “bad parent” would take their children to see a drag queen show.[18] LGBTQ Nation, an online news magazine, has alleged Adam’s apparent hypocrisy on this topic as he has suggested taking children to Hooters.[18]
As someone who makes knives and swords as a hobby, I can verify that many things are capable of sharpening iron. Slightly less things are capable of sharpening steel.
Know what’s great at refining a dull edge to be razor sharp? Ceramic. And I have legitimately heard someone refer to ceramic safety box cutters as “woke” at work. I don’t get the (il)logic of that…
So uhhhh… Yeah. Even “softer” things will sharpen stuff.
I honestly don’t even know what “iron sharpens iron” is supposed to mean.
I just assume it’s code for “sword fighting.”
You know, they rub their irons together to get each other all nice and pointy.
I’ve heard it as “steel sharpens steel” but in the context of male children needing a male role model. I think when boys don’t have a male role model growing up they end up like Nick Adams thinking they need to be an alpha male all the time.
They’re referencing a bible verse
Funny how the part they leave out is gender nonspecific, it just says person.
I wouldn’t say Proverbs is a particularly woke book of the bible, the verse right before that one is, “A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping of a leaky roof in a rainstorm; restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand.”
That’s not really the point. The point is they pick and choose what parts, even the parts of the parts, to follow. It’s almost like they don’t care what the book says unless it agress with them exactly already.
A colleague of mine says he sharpens his knives with… leather.
I have no idea whether to believe them.
Perhaps he meant that he strops his knives? Incredibly important to do so in order to maintain their sharpness.
Tldr leather can be a component, but not the whole thing
So basically when sharpening, you have a few different things that all do slightly different jobs.
A sharpening stone will remove a little metal along the edge, very slowly, but that makes the edge roll over slightly along the opposing edge face. This makes the edge slightly jagged, you can usually see the reflection of light along the edge of a knife to see it. You don’t want to see any shiny reflection on the edge.
To remove the rolled over edge, one method that is quite popular is to take a leather strip, rub some polishing compound into it, and you run the edge of the knife along it in a similar fashion to how you use a sharpening stone. The softer surface combined with a milder abrasive does a nice job, if you do it right.
The end result is a razor sharp knife.
Yeah, that sounds very much like it. Thank you for your explanation.
I have seen this at our local Pakistan restaurant. Curious to see if it works
Conservatives as always saying gayer things than actual gays do.
I think it’s because when you’re out and open, you get it out of your system all the time. But when you’re trying to repress it. The pressure builds up like how if a hydraulic system gets a pinhole leak, It’ll squirt out with enough force to go right through your hand. Speculating of course.
Iron doesn’t sharpen iron. What a dummy. Only a harder substance will sharpen a softer substance.
You underestimate what can be achieved by pounding and grinding.
Grinding, using a stone, which is harder than iron. They don’t make sharpening stones from iron.
I don’t know if this was to point out that a file is iron and that can sharpen stuff, but I’d like to point out that files are generally made from a tool steel alloy that is formulated to be quite a bit harder than iron/standard steels after it gets properly heat treated. Files aren’t just “iron” and there’s a lot of different steels that do different things.
Exclusively iron files are a thing, they just didn’t make for as good a screencap, cuz they look like pressed turds. The point was only that stone isn’t the only option for grinding. An iron file used on some other iron surface would smooth out the scaling on the file pretty quick; but it’d also do a bit of actual grinding on that surface as well.
So, it’d take a lot of grinding, most likely with many file, but you could 100% sharpen an iron edge with an iron file. …and tbh, lots of grinding with many tools fits the theme the thread perfectly!
T12 carbon tool steel is more than just iron
I mean, -that- file is more than just iron, but it’s also more recognizable as a file. Exclusively iron files are a thing; they just look like rectangular turds.
You can sharpen a knife with a chakmak, but I think it’s made of a very hard steel.
I’m pretty sure no one enjoys the company of anyone that calls themselves an alpha.
I always tell those people that they are the incomplete version.
They are also prone to infestation, since they are full of bugs.
Artwork is most likely by Tom of Finland
Most likely!
Most definitely is. Torille.
Nothing screams “wimpy crybaby energy” quite like putting (Alpha Male) in your social media handle.
So true and none of them seem to realise that their alpha maleness look a lot like worshipping some grifting daddy-boss.
Exactly what Geoffrey Asmus is making fun of all the time. Never thought I’d see it so pure in the wild.
Can confirm that my iron bar is sharp af. 😎🥵
IDK, paying Musk for a blue checkmark is pretty beta.
Begging people to purchase your bargain brand of celebrity status isn’t exactly a Chad move either.
Iron can’t even be that sharp. Pretty bendable.
They did used to use it in swords and other blades and cutting tools back in the iron age (hence the name), but steel is obviously the superior metal for such things.
Meanwhile, the Mesoamericans used obsidian, which take a very long time to get dull if you’re using them to cut things like flesh and muscle, either as a weapon or for food. They’re pretty good at cutting through bone too if you feel like sacrificing someone at the top of your pyramid. Obsidian does not, however, sharpen obsidian. Stone knaps obsidian into sharp pieces.
But I suppose “alpha males enjoy the company of alpha males because stone knaps obsidian into sharp pieces” would be less pithy.
They didn’t use pure iron in the Iron Age. Even back then knives and swords were made of steel. In the Iron Age they already knew that adding carbon during the smelting process would increase the hardness of the metal. They just didn’t understand why.
And even meteoritic iron is an alloy of nickel and iron.
And all these years, I thought Nick Adams was a parody account. Fucking hell
Edit: after reading his Wikipedia article, I’ve decided Nick Adams is himself a parody of your average American conservative, whether or not it’s intentional.
I’d that what they call it these days? “Sharpening iron?”
Weak chinned and doughy. Straight out of central casting for republican alphas.
But he alpha man.
I’m looking for an alpha male to sharpen my iron, if ya catch my meaning.
And as we all know, it’s always better with some lubricant, really helps the process along…
“Word around the office is you have a sharp iron”
I don’t think I’d mind sharpening some man’s iron
